Mazda2 coming to Canada?

Mazda2 hatchback coming to Canada

According to an article in Canada’s Globe and Mail, the answer is yes. The report quotes Mazda’s president and CEO Takashi Yamanouchi confirming that the Mazda2/Demio subcompact hatch will be sold in Canada. While the article’s missing any time frame, rumors are hinting the date will be sometime within the next year.

The move towards smaller and smaller cars comes as no surprise… Canada has already been the North American launching pad for cars like the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit and Smart. Does this mean the Mazda2 will one day be sold in the United States? Likely, especially since the Ford Fiesta, a cousin of the Mazda2, is already nearing launch.

Having had the experience of driving a Yaris and a Mazda2, I have to declare that Yaris is pathetic.

Mazda drives better, feels better, brakes better, is MUCH better made. Ergonomics in Yaris is non-existent compared to Mazda, room is limited (I’m 185 cm).

I just hope Mazda will not americanize the car beyond the few necessities. And that the company will not reduce the generous level of standard equipment the 2 gets in Europe.
