Recently I’ve been accused of being overly critical of Acura’s design philosophy, but I think I’ve figured out why I’m so frustrated with this brand. The problem with Acura is that it insists on producing revolutionary design change instead of more traditional design evolution. One reason for the drastic changes might be a common perception that Acura simply doesn’t provide the added luxury and technical refinement that their premium price commands. As a result, an increasing number of consumers are settling with equally equipped cars back at parent Honda’s product stable.

While I’ve already tossed my criticism towards their TSX and RL, it’s these recent photos of the TL that deserve the most attention. And for good reason, the TL is the only recent Acura I’ve actually liked. It’s also Acura’s bread winner. The distinct triangle grill is back and so is the new angular way of doing things. Clearly they’re trying really hard to move away from the Honda association. And you know what? It doesn’t look nearly that bad this time around, especially since the awkward RL dimensions and TSX angles have been toned down.

As for details, the only leak has come from a recent dealer convention in New Orleans where dealers were apparently told the TL will be offered in two models: a basic front-wheel drive and an upscale all-wheel drive model as well. The front-driver will be powered by a 280 horsepower 3.5L V6 whereas the AWD model will receive its motivation from a 3.7L V6 producing 310 horsepower. A Type-S model will not be offered in 2009.

The rear really looks like something off the Mazda6. That distinctly small trunk also looks like something Mazda made.
