Does a tree hugging Honda FCX Clarity make you think indy car racing? Not unless Honda replaces the old ethanol pace cars with their own hydrogen Honda FCX Clarity. Ethanol might be clean, but hydrogen emits water. That’s just cool.

During the third race of the 2008 IRL IndyCar Series at the Twin Ring Motegi track in Tochigi, Japan the FCX Clarity will pace the 18 race cars at the start. The Honda FCX will do this using its 100kW Honda V Flow fuel cell stack which should be capable of about 160 km/h tops. For the time being, the only other place you’ll see the car is in Southern California where hydrogen stations are being tested by a variety of manufacturers. Maybe that this foray into Indy will kick off hydrogen’s global conquest. Maybe not.9080416003mini4l.jpg
